What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in the cells of our body. It is produced by the liver and can also be obtained through the consumption of certain foods, particularly those high in saturated and trans fats. Cholesterol plays an essential role in the body as it is involved in the production of hormones, vitamin D, and substances that aid in digestion.

Different Types of Cholesterol

Cholesterol is transported through the bloodstream in particles called lipoproteins. There are four main types of lipoproteins involved in cholesterol transport:

  1. Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL): Often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, LDL cholesterol carries cholesterol from the liver to the cells. If there is an excess of LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream, it can accumulate in the arteries and contribute to the formation of plaque, which can narrow the arteries and increase the risk of heart disease.

  2. High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL): Known as “good” cholesterol, HDL cholesterol helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream and carries it back to the liver for processing and elimination.

  3. Very-Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) Cholesterol: VLDL cholesterol is a type of lipoprotein that carries triglycerides, a form of fat, in the bloodstream. VLDL particles are eventually converted into LDL cholesterol.

  4. Triglycerides: Triglycerides are a type of fat that circulates in the bloodstream and can be stored in fat cells for energy. High levels of triglycerides are associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

However, imbalances in the levels of these cholesterol types can impact cardiovascular health.

Having high levels of LDL cholesterol and low levels of HDL cholesterol is generally associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. It is important to maintain a healthy balance between LDL and HDL cholesterol levels.

Ideal Cholesterol Levels
